A cladding trim specification is often where a wall design either becomes buildable or starts creating avoidable questions on site. The cladding panels may dominate the elevation, but trims deal with the exposed edges, corners, openings and changes in direction that determine how well the finished work performs and how cleanly it reads.
For contractors, architects and homeowners, the aim is not simply to select a trim that matches the cladding colour. A useful specification establishes the trim’s purpose, material, profile, finish, dimensions and relationship with the wider wall build-up. It also gives the fabricator and installer enough information to avoid assumptions at the point of manufacture or fitting.
What cladding trims are expected to do
Cladding trims provide a controlled finish where boards, sheets or panels meet an edge or junction. Depending on the detail, they can cover cut edges, close external and internal corners, frame window and door openings, form stop ends, or finish the top and bottom of a cladding zone.
Their visual role is obvious, particularly on elevations with dark or contrasting finishes. Their practical role is just as significant. A trim should support the intended weathering detail, protect vulnerable panel edges where required and allow different components to meet without an untidy gap. The exact function depends on the cladding system and the substrate behind it, so a generic profile should not be selected before the junction has been considered.
A trim is not a substitute for the wall’s drainage, ventilation or weather-resisting strategy. Those elements need to be designed as part of the complete cladding build-up. The trim must then suit that arrangement rather than obstruct it.
Start the cladding trim specification with the junction
The most reliable way to specify a trim is to begin with the location it serves. A corner detail has different demands from a window reveal, while a base trim may need to accommodate a deliberate gap, drip detail or transition to another material.
Describe the adjacent materials and their orientation. State whether the cladding runs vertically or horizontally, where panel joints occur, and whether the trim sits proud of the finished face or returns into a reveal. These points affect the visible face width, return dimensions and profile shape.
For a cladding trim specification, the schedule should normally identify:
- the trim reference and exact location on the drawings;
- the profile type, such as external corner, internal corner, start, stop, reveal, head or parapet junction trim;
- the material and required thickness where it has been determined for the project;
- face, return and overall girth dimensions;
- the finish, including the required RAL reference where a powder-coated colour is selected;
- the required lengths, joint locations and method for treating corners or changes in direction;
- the proposed fixing arrangement and whether fixings are to remain visible;

Drawings remain essential. A written description can establish the product requirement, but a clear section through each typical junction makes the intended relationship between components much easier to interpret.
External corners and exposed edges
External corners are highly visible and often receive more contact than flat areas of wall. The specification should establish whether a corner trim covers the cladding edges, whether panels terminate within it, and how much of the profile remains visible on the finished elevation.
Avoid assuming that one standard corner profile will suit every board or panel depth. The required returns depend on the cladding thickness, tolerances, backing arrangement and the gap needed for fitting. On a refurbishment project, site dimensions may vary along the wall, particularly where the existing substrate is not perfectly straight. Measuring the finished build-up at several points is more useful than relying on a single nominal dimension.
Where two trim lengths meet, specify the joint treatment. A neatly planned joint position is generally less noticeable than one placed close to a corner, opening or change in material. The allowance required at joints should be agreed with the relevant system manufacturer and reflected in the cutting schedule.
Window and door reveals
Openings bring several materials into a small area: cladding, trim, frame, sealant, cavity components and possibly a sill or head flashing. The cladding trim detail needs to recognise this rather than treating the reveal as a simple folded cover.
Set out the reveal depth from the finished cladding face to the window or door frame. Confirm which component forms the visible return, where the cladding ends and how the head and sill details connect. If the trim is intended to colour-match surrounding aluminium features, identify the finish consistently across the schedule.
A common source of poor finishing is specifying reveal trims without allowing for the practical sequence of installation. The chosen detail must be capable of being fitted around the frame and cladding in the order planned for the project.
Choose material with adjacent components in mind
Architectural aluminium is a common choice for exterior trims because it can be fabricated into crisp folded profiles and finished in a wide range of colours. It is particularly useful where a project calls for made-to-measure face widths, returns or folded junction details rather than a limited standard size.
However, material selection should be considered alongside the cladding system, fixing type and surrounding metalwork. State the proposed material rather than leaving it as “metal trim”, especially where the elevation includes aluminium fascias, copings, flashings or rainwater components that need a coordinated appearance.
Also consider contact between dissimilar materials. The detail should identify separating layers or other measures where the wider system requires them. This is a design and installation coordination point, not something to leave to a last-minute site decision.
Dimensions, tolerances and movement allowance
A trim profile should be dimensioned from the finished surfaces it needs to cover, not simply from the sheet or board nominal thickness. Include sufficient coverage for the proposed installation tolerances, while avoiding oversized faces that make the detail look heavy or dominate narrow reveals.
Long runs require particular attention. Metals, cladding panels and the structure behind them can respond differently to temperature and moisture changes. The specification should therefore show where individual lengths begin and end, how joints are formed and which component’s guidance governs any movement provision. Do not fix a trim arrangement so rigidly that it prevents the cladding system from performing as intended.
Where a profile is fabricated to a project-specific shape, provide a dimensioned drawing or section rather than relying on a verbal description such as “wide angle” or “deep reveal”. Include the required bend direction and identify which face is visible. This avoids reversed folds or profiles that fit physically but present the wrong face on the elevation.
Finish and visual coordination
Finish should be stated as a clear requirement, not an afterthought. If colour matching matters, record the RAL reference, sheen level where relevant and the faces to receive the finish. This is especially useful where trims sit alongside aluminium window surrounds, roofline components, copings or gutters.
The same colour can look different when used on broad cladding panels, narrow folded edges and recessed reveals. A dark trim may give deliberate definition around openings, while a matched trim can reduce visual interruption. Neither approach is automatically right. It depends on the building’s elevation, the panel layout and whether the trim is intended to be a feature or to disappear into the cladding.
Specify the finish early enough for all visible metalwork to be coordinated. Late changes to colour or profile width can affect more than appearance, particularly where corners, reveals and flashings meet.
Fixing details need to be stated, not assumed
The trim specification should identify the intended fixing zone and whether the fixing heads will be exposed. This helps determine the profile’s face width and avoids a detail that leaves too little room for practical installation.
Fixing selection must suit the substrate and cladding system. Confirm this with the system guidance and the parties responsible for installation. Where trims conceal a fixing line, ensure there remains adequate access to install and inspect the work. Where a folded aluminium trim is supplied for site fitting, accurate set-out matters: forcing a profile into a tight or uneven opening can distort the visible face.
For bespoke fabricated profiles, provide final site-checked dimensions before manufacture wherever possible. A made-to-measure trim can resolve awkward junctions effectively, but only when the measured opening, return depth and required overlap are correctly recorded.
Check the specification before ordering
Before placing an order, compare the trim schedule with the latest elevation drawings, sections and cladding layout. Check that every exposed termination has been addressed, including short returns at openings, panel ends at rooflines and transitions into parapet or flashing details.
It is also worth reviewing how full lengths will be handled on site and where joints are least conspicuous. Small decisions at this stage can reduce cutting, prevent mismatched details and produce a more consistent finished elevation.
