A parapet can look like a minor edge detail from ground level, yet it has a major influence on how a flat or low-pitched commercial roof performs and presents. The scenario is representative rather than a fixed specification. Every building requires its own survey, roof assessment and detailing decisions, particularly where existing membranes, movement joints, access restrictions or concealed drainage are involved.

The starting point: a weathered office roofline

The project concerns a two-storey commercial office building with a masonry parapet around part of its roof perimeter. The roof had been renewed previously, but the parapet edge had received only local repairs. The team set out from the most visible corner, checking alignment regularly rather than allowing small discrepancies to accumulate over a long run. What changed once the work was complete

The completed parapet had a continuous, controlled roofline rather than a patchwork of ageing coping sections. The formed corners and consistent colour gave the building a more coherent appearance from ground level, while the overhanging coping arrangement helped direct rainfall away from the vulnerable top and face of the parapet.

Just as significantly, the refurbishment made future maintenance easier to organise. A clearly detailed roof edge is simpler to inspect than a series of ad hoc repairs. During planned roof visits, the facilities team can check the coping runs, joints, fixings where visible, adjacent flashings and drainage outlets as part of one routine.

The project also demonstrated a useful commercial lesson: parapet works are most effective when treated as part of a roof-edge package.
