For rooflines, parapets, wall junctions, window heads and cladding interfaces, a powder coated flashing is often both a protective component and a visible architectural feature. The specification should therefore go beyond a colour reference. It needs to define the material, profile, dimensions, finish and practical requirements for installation.

Start with the purpose of the flashing

The first question is not which RAL colour to choose. It is what the flashing must do at that particular junction. A head flashing may direct water away from a window or door opening. A parapet flashing may cap a wall edge and create a neat transition to adjoining roof finishes. A trim at a roof abutment may conceal an edge while helping to direct rainwater clear of the wall.

State where the component sits, what materials it meets and which way it needs to shed water. Include a simple drawing, marked-up elevation or section wherever possible. Define the profile with usable dimensions

A fabrication drawing should show more than the overall width and length. Give the dimensions of each visible face, return, upstand, drip or hem that matters to the installation. Identify the direction of the folds and nominate the external face where appearance is important.

For made-to-measure flashings, useful information normally includes:

  • overall developed width and finished face dimensions;
  • leg lengths, return folds and drip details;
  • required lengths and whether joints will occur on site;
  • fixing zones, holes or concealed fixing requirements where known; and
  • the relationship to adjoining roof, wall or window components.

Where a dimension is critical because it covers a membrane edge, cladding termination or frame, make that clear on the drawing. It is also sensible to distinguish between dimensions that are essential and those that can be adjusted slightly to suit fabrication.

Long lengths deserve particular attention. Decide how sections will be transported, handled and joined before finalising the profile. A flashing with a broad exposed face may need a considered joint arrangement to retain a consistent appearance. The location of joints should avoid obvious focal points where possible and should work with the direction of water run-off.

Allow for laps, joints and movement

Flashings are rarely installed as one uninterrupted piece. Where sections meet, the design needs an allowance for laps, cover strips, expansion joints or another suitable joining detail. The arrangement depends on the profile, the substrate and the appearance required.

Do not rely on sealant alone as the defining feature of a joint. A well-considered formed overlap or cover detail gives the installer a clearer arrangement and can keep the visible finish tidier. The direction of overlap matters too: arrange it so water is directed over, rather than towards, the joint.

External metalwork can move with changes in temperature. Longer runs and darker colours may make this more noticeable, particularly where a profile is restrained at multiple points. The fixing layout and joints should allow for the behaviour of the complete assembly. This is a detailing question for the project team and installer, not something to leave until the flashing arrives on site.

Specify the powder coated finish accurately

A RAL reference is a good starting point, but it is not always the whole finish specification. State the required colour, sheen or texture where these are relevant to the scheme. A matt, satin or textured surface can look materially different from a standard smooth gloss finish, even when the stated colour is similar.

If the flashing needs to match fascia boards, copings, gutters, window surrounds or other architectural metalwork, identify the reference component and use the same agreed finish description throughout the package. This reduces the risk of adjacent elements appearing mismatched due to differing gloss levels or textures.

Remember that folds, edges and concealed faces may be viewed differently once installed. Tell the fabricator which faces are exposed and whether the reverse needs coating. This is particularly relevant for open-ended profiles, deep returns and details that can be seen from below or from an upper floor.

A sample can be useful where colour matching is especially sensitive, such as on a prominent façade or when new metalwork sits beside retained elements. Lighting, surrounding materials and surface texture can all change how a colour reads on site.

Coordinate fixings with the finished appearance

Fixings are often the point where an otherwise clean flashing detail is compromised. Before specifying, establish whether the component will be face-fixed, fixed through a return, held beneath an adjoining element or attached using another project-specific method. The chosen approach must suit the backing construction and allow the installer to position the flashing without distorting it.

Where exposed fixings are required, consider their position, spacing and visual impact. Specify whether colour-matched heads are required rather than assuming they will be supplied. Keep fixing lines consistent and avoid placing fasteners where water is likely to sit or where they interrupt a prominent visible face unnecessarily.

Also consider material compatibility. Flashings, fixings, sealants and adjacent building materials should be selected as a compatible assembly. If there is uncertainty, provide the proposed materials and junction build-up to the relevant suppliers for project-specific guidance.

Write an enquiry that can be quoted and fabricated

A clear enquiry saves time at both quotation and production stages. It should identify the quantity, profile drawing, dimensions, material requirement, finish, lengths and delivery constraints. For a refurbishment project, photographs with a scale reference can help explain irregular existing conditions, but they should support rather than replace measured dimensions.

If the profile is intended to replace an existing flashing, check the condition and shape of the substrate before ordering. Old roof edges and wall faces are not always straight, and replacement parts may need allowances that are not obvious from a simple overall measurement.
