A roof trim that is only a few millimetres out can leave an awkward gap at an abutment, fail to cover a fixing line or simply refuse to sit correctly over the finished roof build-up. Knowing how to order bespoke roof trims is therefore less about choosing a colour and more about giving the fabricator a complete, usable description of the detail.

For contractors, roofers, architects and homeowners, the objective is the same: receive a profile that fits the intended location, protects the relevant edge or junction, and gives the roofline a clean, consistent finish. The best orders begin with confirmed site dimensions and a clear understanding of what the trim needs to cover.

Start with the function of the roof trim

“Roof trim” can describe several different components, and the required profile depends entirely on its position. A trim may finish a roof edge, cover a fascia junction, form a verge detail, protect an upstand, close a gap beside cladding, or provide a neat transition where two exterior materials meet.

Before measuring, establish precisely what the component is expected to do. Is it a visual cover, an edge protection detail, a flashing-type profile, or a combination of these? Is it being fitted before the final roof covering, over an existing finished surface, or alongside another metal component? The answer affects the return sizes, fold directions, overlap allowances and fixing faces.

It is also worth identifying the adjoining materials. A profile fitted against render, brickwork, roof membranes, tiles, composite panels or timber may need a different shape and installation sequence. A photograph of the location, taken both close up and from further back, is often as useful as a measurement sheet when requesting a quote.

Measure the finished build-up, not just the drawing

Architectural drawings are a useful starting point, but bespoke fabrication should normally be based on dimensions checked on site. Roof build-ups can change during construction as battens, boards, insulation, membranes, render systems and roof coverings are installed. A trim designed around an early dimension may not cover the final assembly as intended.

Measure the overall projection the trim must span, the depth of any face it needs to cover, and the length of each run. Record dimensions in millimetres and make clear whether they are finished dimensions or dimensions taken before another material is installed.

For a folded profile, provide each visible face and return separately. For example, rather than requesting an angle described only as “150 mm wide”, state the two legs required, such as a 100 mm horizontal leg and a 50 mm vertical leg. If a return is needed to stiffen an edge, conceal a cut edge or create a fixing point, give its size and direction as well.

Where a trim will overlap another element, state the intended overlap rather than assuming it will be included. Similarly, if the profile must finish flush with a board, parapet face or roof edge, say so clearly. These details determine the developed width of the metal and the final folded shape.

Check lengths, corners and changes in level

Long straight runs are usually the simplest part of an order. Corners, rakes, step changes and uneven existing surfaces need more attention. Measure every section separately and label them on a sketch. Do not assume that two opposing elevations are identical, particularly on refurbishment work.

State whether corners are required as separate pieces, pre-formed components or straight lengths to be cut and joined on site. The practical choice depends on the profile, access, handling and the installer’s preferred method. A clear plan avoids receiving straight lengths where a folded corner detail was expected.

Allow for practical handling too. Very long pieces may be more difficult to transport, carry around a site or manoeuvre into position. Discuss preferred maximum lengths where access is restricted by scaffolding, stairwells, roof access or narrow side passages.

Provide a simple dimensioned drawing

A detailed CAD drawing is helpful, but it is not essential for every enquiry. A clear hand sketch can be sufficient if it shows the profile in section, all dimensions, fold directions and the intended location. Use arrows to indicate which face is external and which edge sits against the building.

For more complex work, include an elevation drawing showing lengths, corner positions, joints, openings and changes in level. Label each item with a reference, such as RT1, RT2 and RT3, then use those references consistently across photographs, drawings and schedules.

A useful bespoke roof trim drawing should show:

  • the section shape, including each leg, return and fold;
  • the overall length of every individual piece;
  • the orientation of the profile when installed;
  • the location of laps, corners, stop ends or cut-outs; and
  • the material and finish required, if already selected.

If a dimension is critical, mark it as such. If a measurement is approximate because the existing wall is uneven, say that too. Fabrication is most accurate when the information supplied reflects the conditions on site rather than presenting uncertain dimensions as fixed ones.

Specify the material and finish for the application

Material selection should suit the profile’s purpose, the surrounding components and the visual finish of the building. Aluminium is widely used for exterior trims because it provides a clean finished appearance and is suited to fabricated profiles. Galvanised steel angle may be appropriate for particular construction details where a steel section is required.

Avoid specifying a material simply because it was used elsewhere on the project. The profile geometry, exposure, fixing method and adjoining materials all matter. If the specification already names a material, provide that reference. If not, describe the application and ask for guidance on a suitable option.

Colour should be stated using the required RAL reference where one is known. “Dark grey” or “black” can mean different things across a project and is not precise enough for a colour-matched roofline or façade. Confirm whether the finish is needed on the outward-facing surface only or on all visible faces, especially where returns may be seen from below or at an angle.

Where matching is important, include details of nearby fascia, soffit, guttering, windows, cladding or coping. This helps ensure the trim is considered as part of the wider exterior detail rather than as an isolated component.

Explain how the trim will be fitted

The fabricator does not need to undertake the installation to benefit from knowing the proposed fitting arrangement. Explain what the trim is fixed to, whether this is timber, metal framing, masonry or another substrate, and identify any constraints around available fixing positions.

A profile may need a concealed fixing flange, a wider face to accept fixings, or a return that tucks behind an adjacent material. Conversely, a trim intended to be bonded or captured within a build-up may require a different arrangement from one fixed through its face.

Do not leave fixing assumptions until delivery. Discuss whether screw heads will remain visible, whether joints require a cover arrangement, and how ends terminate at walls or roof edges. These are small detailing decisions, but they strongly influence the finished appearance.

Request a quotation with a complete schedule

A practical quote request groups all information in one place. Include the project name or site reference, contact details, required quantities, drawings, photographs, material preference, finish, piece lengths and any delivery access considerations. If the project has several trim types, use a schedule rather than describing them in a single email paragraph.

For each item, state the quantity required and whether the dimension is per piece or a total run length. This prevents a common and costly misunderstanding: ordering one long length when several individual sections are needed, or vice versa.

If an order is based on a sample, existing trim or architect’s detail, supply photographs alongside dimensions. A sample can indicate the general form, but it should not replace measured information, particularly if the new trim must work with a different roof build-up.

Review the fabrication detail before confirming

Once a proposed profile or quotation is returned, check it against the site rather than approving it from memory. Review every leg size, folded return, piece length, orientation and colour reference. Hold the drawing against photographs of the installation area and ask the installer to review it where possible.

Pay particular attention to handed components. A left-hand and right-hand corner may appear similar on paper but are not interchangeable when fitted. The same applies to profiles with unequal legs or returns folded in one direction.

This final check is the point to resolve uncertainty. It is far easier to clarify whether a 25 mm return folds inward or outward before fabrication than to adapt a finished component on site.

Questions commonly asked when ordering bespoke roof trims

Should I add extra length for cutting on site?

Only add an allowance where it is genuinely needed and clearly identify it. Exact finished lengths are usually preferable for straightforward runs, while refurbishment work or difficult junctions may justify a controlled cutting allowance. The key is to state the intention rather than leaving it open to interpretation.

Can I order from photographs alone?

Photographs help explain the detail but cannot reliably replace a dimensioned section and confirmed lengths. Use them to show context, access and adjoining materials alongside measurements.

What if the roof edge is not straight?

Record the variation and explain where it occurs. Depending on the detail, the trim may need to follow the line, be supplied in manageable sections, or be designed to provide adequate cover over the uneven area.

A well-prepared bespoke trim enquiry does not need to be complicated. It needs to be specific: what the profile covers, where it fits, how it is oriented, what it is made from, and the exact dimensions it must achieve. Taking that care before ordering gives the installer a far better starting point for a tidy, durable roofline detail.
