A steel angle can look like a simple line item on a drawing, but an incomplete description often creates avoidable questions at fabrication or on site. To specify steel angles properly, define what the angle is required to do, where it sits within the build-up and the dimensions that installers will actually need. This is especially relevant at roof edges, cladding details, openings and junctions where a neat finish depends on accurate metalwork.

For exterior work, the right choice is rarely just “an L-shaped steel section”. Material condition, leg sizes, thickness, length, finish, fixing approach and any fabrication all affect whether the profile suits the detail. A clear specification also helps suppliers quote the correct item and avoids a substitute that does not match the intended application.

Start with the angle’s job in the detail

Before selecting a size, establish the function of the steel angle. It may be a protective corner, an exposed trim, a lining piece, a packing or support component, or part of a larger fabricated assembly. Each use places different demands on the profile.

An angle used as an architectural edge trim is usually chosen for its visible line and ability to cover a junction. The exposed faces, finish quality and corner alignment matter as much as the section size. An angle used behind another component may need to provide a fixing face, close a gap or support a local detail. Where an angle has a structural role, its design and connection requirements should be confirmed by the project’s suitably qualified structural designer rather than selected from appearance alone.

It also helps to identify whether the angle is internal, external or intermittently exposed. A steel section positioned behind a fascia, coping or flashing is subject to different conditions from one fixed openly on a parapet or at the base of wall cladding. Describe the surrounding materials too. The angle may need to interface with aluminium trims, timber, masonry, insulation, membrane systems or coated steel components.

Specify steel angles by leg size and thickness

Steel angles are normally described by the dimensions of their two legs and the material thickness. For an equal angle, both legs are the same size. An unequal angle has one longer leg, which can be useful where one face must give greater cover or provide a wider fixing return.

For example, a written requirement should make clear whether the project needs an equal or unequal angle, the two leg dimensions, the thickness and the required lengths. A simple note such as “galvanised steel angle” leaves too much open to interpretation.

The leg dimensions should relate to the installation detail, not just the visible face. Allow for the required cover, the width needed for fixings, adjacent components and reasonable site tolerances. If the angle is intended to conceal a board edge or a joint, check that its return is sufficient after allowing for the actual build-up of the materials beneath it.

Thickness should be selected to suit the intended use and fabrication process. A thicker section may be appropriate where a firmer profile, stronger fixing area or more substantial fabricated component is required. However, it can also be heavier, less straightforward to form and more visually prominent at a fine architectural detail. The best choice depends on the application rather than a single default thickness.

Check the inside corner and finished edges

The internal corner of a steel angle is not always a perfectly sharp 90-degree line. The bend or rolling radius can matter where the profile must sit tightly against another component. If the angle needs to fit around a particularly crisp edge, include the relevant detail in drawings or discuss it at enquiry stage.

Finished edges are equally worth identifying when steel angles remain visible. A folded, cut or fabricated edge can affect the final appearance, particularly near entrances, window surrounds and roofline details viewed from ground level.

Choose the material condition for the exposure

For exterior projects, galvanised steel angles are commonly specified where the detail requires steel with a protective zinc coating. They are often used in construction-related applications where a durable metal component is needed within an exterior assembly.

The specification should state the material condition required rather than assuming it. If the angle will be galvanised, clarify whether it is required as a standard galvanised section or whether fabrication, cutting and any other finishing steps need to be considered as part of the supplied item. Cut ends, drilled holes, welds and site alterations can all change the condition of the finished component and should not be left as an afterthought.

Avoid treating galvanised steel as a universal answer for every location. The degree of exposure, the detail’s ability to shed water, contact with other materials and the likelihood of trapped debris all deserve consideration. A profile that remains wet or is buried within a poorly ventilated junction needs more careful detailing than one used in a dry, protected location.

Where the angle meets aluminium or another metal, identify the interface and follow the wider project detail for separation materials, fixings and moisture control. Direct contact between dissimilar materials should not be assumed to be suitable without considering the specific assembly.

Include fabrication requirements at quotation stage

Standard lengths can suit straightforward work, but many exterior details benefit from steel angles prepared to match the drawing. If the component requires cutting to length, holes, slots, notches, mitres, welded sections or a particular return arrangement, provide this information with dimensions and clear reference points.

For repeated items, a fabrication schedule is useful. It should distinguish between similar-looking angles that have different hole positions, handed mitres or lengths. Naming each item against a drawing reference reduces the chance of components being mixed up once delivered to site.

When specifying holes, record their diameter or slot size, centre positions and the datum from which they are measured. It is more useful to state “two holes at 50 mm centres from the left-hand end” than simply to mark two dots on a sketch. If a component is handed, make that explicit by showing the viewing direction.

Do not leave length and handling to chance

A long angle may be practical on paper but awkward to transport, move through a constrained site or lift into position. Conversely, adding too many short lengths can introduce more joints and visible interruptions. Consider the access route, storage area and how the finished line will be set out before deciding on supplied lengths.

State whether dimensions are overall finished lengths and whether they apply before or after any mitres, notches or folds. This is particularly important at corners. A 45-degree mitre may create a clean visual junction, but both parts must be measured consistently for the faces to meet as intended.

Where a run is made up of several pieces, indicate the joint locations where appearance is important. A joint positioned close to an external corner, downpipe, opening or change of material can look more deliberate than one that falls randomly within a prominent elevation.

Coordinate fixings, movement and adjacent finishes

A steel angle only performs as intended when it can be fixed without compromising the rest of the detail. Confirm which leg receives the fixing, whether the fixing heads will be visible and whether there is adequate backing behind the proposed location. Fixing locations should also avoid clashing with membrane laps, flashing turns, insulation rails or other concealed elements.

Do not assume an angle should be fixed tightly at every point along its length. The appropriate fixing method and spacing depend on the material, the substrate and the detail. For exposed metalwork, the project designer or fixing-system supplier should determine the arrangement where this is critical.

Allow for tolerances at interfaces. Masonry, render, timber and existing refurbishment surfaces are rarely perfectly straight. A steel angle specified to an exact theoretical measurement may need an allowance for packing, scribing or a cover dimension that can accommodate minor variation. This is often more valuable than choosing an unnecessarily large section.

Information to include on a steel angle enquiry

A concise enquiry avoids the usual back-and-forth. For each type of angle, provide the material requirement, equal or unequal leg sizes, thickness, finished length, quantity and whether it is visible or concealed. Add drawings showing fabrication, holes, mitres, notches and handed items.

Also explain the intended location, particularly where the angle interfaces with roofline trims, parapet copings, flashings or cladding. This gives the supplier enough context to identify questions before manufacture, while leaving design responsibility with the project team.

Practical checks before ordering

Before placing an order, compare the final schedule against the latest drawings and site measurements. Check that all measurements use the same units, quantities account for every elevation or opening and similar parts have not been grouped together incorrectly.

Review the finish expectation as well. If the angle is exposed, decide whether galvanised appearance is acceptable within the architectural scheme or whether the detail calls for a different approach. Confirm how cut edges, joints and interfaces will be treated by the installation team so that the completed work matches the intended finish.

A well-specified steel angle is a small but useful piece of coordination. Give it a clear function, accurate dimensions and enough fabrication detail, and it becomes far easier to quote, supply and install as part of a clean exterior detail.
